Task 1: Concept Art Magazine Article
Task 1 Notes/Research
Task 2: Concept Art and Annotations
This first drawing is a pencil sketch of my dragon character, Curlytooth. I was new to drawing dragons, so I didn't exactly have his design and proportions down to a science. It still works well as a bit of a life-study and character design. These drawings are still a bit rougher and not as clean. The full-body sketch is particularly well done in my opinion. I worked with pencil because it's an easy tool to sketch out designs with. I usually draw with pencil, so it's something I'm used to. The style is 2D and cartoonish, and this is because the game is supposed to be a visual novel. I wanted to draw the character in the theoretical game's 2D style. Here, it's a bit of a rough idea sketch. Overall, this piece is pretty okay. It's definitely rough, but okay.
This next drawing is another pencil sketch. This time, it's a life study/character sketch of the main protagonist; Princess Skylin. It shows two different outfits/designs for the character for different pints of the game. One outfit is the royal dress she begins with. This dress is honestly a bit simple, and could have been drawn with more detail. Overall, it's still a good look for the character. The other is the outfit she is seen wearing on her travels. This one is a little more creative, and Skylin is drawn with a good pose. Skylin has multiple outfits because of events that happen throughout the game. Her change in outfit will sort of symbolize her taking on a new life starting her adventure with Curlytooth. The pencil drawing still makes the piece look rough, so maybe something like marker could have made it look better. I'm still proud of her design, but I just could have done better with the art.
This next picture is technically two pieces in a way. These two are both pencil natural sketches. They portray different settings that could be a part of the game. The first drawing is an attempt at drawing the interior of Curlytooth's cave hideaway. As you can see, it isn't very detailed. I will admit to not being the best at drawing backgrounds and environments. The top drawing has some problems with detail and perspective.
The second half, on the other hand, shows a bit of improvement. It is a natural/environment sketch portraying the lair of the main villain, the tyrannical King of Dragons. While the pencil sketching might not show it much, but it's supposed to be a threatening lava cave filled with treasure. The king has a lot of presence in the drawing, sitting on his stone perch that is supposedly surrounded by lava. The design for this area shows more improvement when compared to the first half.
This drawing is a bit of an architectural drawing of Skalmir Castle, Skylin's original home. It was sketched in pencil, and done over in pen. The bolder outlines make the drawing look a bit better than the pure pencil sketches from earlier. For my attempt at drawing a castle, it isn't too bad. The problem with this drawing is that it could use more details. Otherwise, I feel that it's a good design for a castle. It is meant to be an important place in the game's story. A huge plot point is that the skull of the original king is being displayed over the front gate of the palace. This is a reminder of the conflict between dragons and humans. All I can really say is that I could have colored this and given it more complex detail. Otherwise, it's a fine drawing for what it is.
This is another life study/character sheet of Curlytooth. This time, it has been drawn digitally. This is probably the best drawn out of this portfolio of concept art. I personally like to draw digitally on the computer, so this turned out well. It displays the character, along with a few expressions. This drawing shows some improvement when it comes to drawing creatures like dragons. My one problem is that I could have put a lot more detail into this drawing, especially since this was done digitally. The drawing is very flat, and barely has any shading. Otherwise, it's a vast improvement over the first drawing. The character model is well done, and the expressions give a bit of insight into Curlytooth's character.
