Task 2: Concept Art and Annotations

This first drawing is a pencil sketch of my dragon character, Curlytooth. I was new to drawing dragons, so I didn't exactly have his design and proportions down to a science. It still works well as a bit of a life-study and character design. These drawings are still a bit rougher and not as clean. The full-body sketch is particularly well done in my opinion. I worked with pencil because it's an easy tool to sketch out designs with. I usually draw with pencil, so it's something I'm used to. The style is 2D and cartoonish, and this is because the game is supposed to be a visual novel. I wanted to draw the character in the theoretical game's 2D style. Here, it's a bit of a rough idea sketch. Overall, this piece is pretty okay. It's definitely rough, but okay.

This next drawing is another pencil sketch. This time, it's a life study/character sketch of the main protagonist; Princess Skylin. It shows two different outfits/designs for the character for different pints of the game. One outfit is the royal dress she begins with. This dress is honestly a bit simple, and could have been drawn with more detail. Overall, it's still a good look for the character. The other is the outfit she is seen wearing on her travels. This one is a little more creative, and Skylin is drawn with a good pose. Skylin has multiple outfits because of events that happen throughout the game. Her change in outfit will sort of symbolize her taking on a new life starting her adventure with Curlytooth. The pencil drawing still makes the piece look rough, so maybe something like marker could have made it look better. I'm still proud of her design, but I just could have done better with the art.

This next picture is technically two pieces in a way. These two are both pencil natural sketches. They portray different settings that could be a part of the game. The first drawing is an attempt at drawing the interior of Curlytooth's cave hideaway. As you can see, it isn't very detailed. I will admit to not being the best at drawing backgrounds and environments. The top drawing has some problems with detail and perspective.

The second half, on the other hand, shows a bit of improvement. It is a natural/environment sketch portraying the lair of the main villain, the tyrannical King of Dragons. While the pencil sketching might not show it much, but it's supposed to be a threatening lava cave filled with treasure. The king has a lot of presence in the drawing, sitting on his stone perch that is supposedly surrounded by lava. The design for this area shows more improvement when compared to the first half.

This drawing is a bit of an architectural drawing of Skalmir Castle, Skylin's original home. It was sketched in pencil, and done over in pen. The bolder outlines make the drawing look a bit better than the pure pencil sketches from earlier. For my attempt at drawing a castle, it isn't too bad. The problem with this drawing is that it could use more details. Otherwise, I feel that it's a good design for a castle. It is meant to be an important place in the game's story. A huge plot point is that the skull of the original king is being displayed over the front gate of the palace. This is a reminder of the conflict between dragons and humans. All I can really say is that I could have colored this and given it more complex detail. Otherwise, it's a fine drawing for what it is.

This is another life study/character sheet of Curlytooth. This time, it has been drawn digitally. This is probably the best drawn out of this portfolio of concept art. I personally like to draw digitally on the computer, so this turned out well. It displays the character, along with a few expressions. This drawing shows some improvement when it comes to drawing creatures like dragons. My one problem is that I could have put a lot more detail into this drawing, especially since this was done digitally. The drawing is very flat, and barely has any shading. Otherwise, it's a vast improvement over the first drawing. The character model is well done, and the expressions give a bit of insight into Curlytooth's character.

Task 3/4

These are the final few pieces of concept art for my video game "Dragon's Head". It is a (theoretical) visual novel game about a princess of a human kingdom being taken by a dragon. She later befriends this dragon, and they inadvertently start a revolt against the king of dragons himself.

The game and story will be relatively choice-based. Your actions will matter to the outcome of the story like plenty of visual novels.

It being a visual novel experience, the general art style of the concept AND final art will be two dimensional similarly to cartoons or anime. (The anime style is a staple of Visual Novels)

Life Study/Anatomy

This first piece of concept art for the unit is centered around a new character, Redthorne. The character begins as an antagonist, but can potentially be befriended. This piece shows his rough personality through his life study and the accompanying facial expressions.

Redthorne is/was a follower of the "new age king" of dragons. He is a very fierce, ruthless and cunning dragon with a secret kind center hidden deep down. It is encouraged, and debatably important to befriend him because he can serve a great purpose to the story.

In terms of his design, it is very red-based save for Redthorne's pink eyes. (Which are pink because I didn't want every part to be a shade of red.) I wanted to create a very rough, ruthless, and complex character with Redthorne and I believe I pulled that off relatively well with the various expressions.

Environment

Cave Concept Art.png

This second piece of concept art is taking another shot at drawing Curlytooth's cave home. Curlytooth lives in a small cave near a forest. It serves as a bit of a home base for the two protagonists during certain key moments of the game's story. The quaint and organized way of "hoarding" his treasures shows a bit of Curlytooth's more fussy and neat-freak personality through how he has them all in containers like pots and crates. This detail also sets him apart from the other dragons, making him quite unique.

I was going for a very natural and welcoming theme for Curlytooth's home. I personally think I captured this a bit along with adding in Curlytooth's interesting personality. Curlytooth's cave is meant to be a very cozy and even somewhat cute (although Curlytooth constantly denies it) setting that endears the player to the main character's new dragon companion.

Dragon's Tooth Concept Art.png

This last piece of concept art is an object drawing. It is a drawing of the protagonist's main weapon, "The Dragon's Tooth". The Dragon's Tooth is one of a special group of weapons forged by dragons, kept in the possession of those in loyalty to the king of dragons. Curlytooth was originally in possession of this weapon, but he rarely ever used it and relied on draconic magic.

The protagonist later receives this weapon, and it acts as a sort of symbol of their friendship. The Dragon's Tooth can even be used to solve a few puzzles throughout the story. It may have a simple design, but it has a little more going on than you'd expect.
